The Department of Justice (DOJ) – Office of Cybercrime (OOC) issues this Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Material in light of the increasing number of reports concerning illegal access and requests for access retrieval involving Facebook accounts that it receives from the general public.
In particular, this IEC Material aims to provide instructions to the general public on how to recover and regain access to their respective Facebook accounts through various mechanisms provided by META Platforms, Inc.
In addition, this will also provide guidance on how to enable two (2)-Factor Authentication (2FA) on one’s Facebook account. 2FA is a security feature that requires individuals to enter a special security code each time they try to access Facebook from an unusual browser or mobile device. It helps to ensure that only authorized users can access accounts on Facebook.
The DOJ-OOC is hopeful that this will somehow initially address the issues concerning the unlawful use of illegally accessed Facebook accounts to further the commission of computer-related fraud and other offenses under Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
